In cities across the nation, especially in those cities with lax law enforcement and cuts to police budgets, recent weeks have seen a new and dangerous criminal tactic.
Large groups of criminals are engaging in carefully organized “smash and grab” attacks on retail stores, robbing merchandise and violently attacking customers and store staff. It’s really terrifying.
Many supporters of law enforcement have spoken out, and we at the United Police Fund are among the most outspoken.
When city governments cave in to anti-police extremists with their demand to “defund the police,” it is no surprise that crime is spiraling out of control, and that criminals are becoming bolder and more daring.
Even the ultra-liberal CNN, which is certainly biased against law enforcement, reported the following:
“US cities are facing a spree of ‘smash-and-grab’ crimes…. California isn’t the only place grappling with “smash-and-grab” crimes. Fourteen robbers barged into a Louis Vuitton store in suburban Chicago … and fled with more than $100,000 in handbags and other merchandise…. Such cases aren’t always a priority for law enforcement…. San Francisco has seen a surge in crime…. In the Central district, for example, larceny and theft incidents are up almost 88% from a year earlier, and overall crime is up almost 52%, according to police statistics. Many of the store thieves wear masks or hoods, making them difficult to identify even when they’re spotted on security camera…. One reason for this is law enforcement’s lack of resources, which means theft cases sometimes are put on the back burner, he said. And, he added, the ‘defund the police’ movement has sapped some officers’ morale…. Thieves may face few consequences…. The decriminalization of low-level offenses in some states has created opportunities for criminals to manipulate the system….” – Source: CNN
